Furnace filter is a must for you to keep out of allergens, pollens, dust, etc. You must have a lot of questions want to ask for furnace filters. In short, most of the furnace air filters can help reduce around 90% or more of such allergens. Common types of furnace air filter include electrostatic furnace filter and glass fiber furnace filter. Common brands of furnace air filter include Honeywell furnace filters, Carrier furnace filters and 3M. You can read more about such filters in another post name air conditioner filters. Now, we can share more about the frequently asked questions!

Why I need a furnace filter?
Basically there are two functions for a furnace filter. First if for better maintenance and second is for better air quality. With the airborne particles blocking functions, furnace filters help avoid dust and dirt built-up, which bog down the blower moter. Also, with the airborne particles being captured, less are existing in the air that you are breathing, therefore, good to your health and respiratory system.

How often should I change my furnace filter?
There are several factors for you to consider if you need to change your furnace filter. First and the easiest are to base on the recommendation or guideline of your furnace.

Other factors include the type of filter that you are using, the operating time and the existing air quality (e.g. number of pets that you have). As most of the disposable filters are inexpensive, you can simply follow the general guideline that you change fiberglass and electrostatic panel filters for every 1 -3 months and plated ones for every 3 months to a year.

Do I need a high efficiency filter?
Filter efficiency refers to the efficiency or the percentage of airborne particles that the filter can capture. If you are using a high efficiency furnace, you can use either a high-efficiency or a low-efficiency filter.

How can I get the right size of furnace filter?
Normally, filter size is measured by width x length x thickness in inches. For example, a filter at a size of 20×25x1 means 20 inches wide x 25 inches long x 1 inch thick. 1 inch think is most common for residential furnace filters. Instead of actually measuring the size, you may find such information printed on the furnace filters.

What is MERV rating?
MERV is the abbreviation of Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, a rating number. This value indicates the filter’s ability to capture the airborne particles in size of 3.0 to 10.0 microns. The rating is derived from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). In short, the higher the MERV rating, the more efficient is the filter. Typical residential filters will have a 1 to 11 MERV rating.

In accordance to the International Scientific Forum on Home Hygiene (IFH), hands most frequently transmit different types of infections. Therefore, keeping your hands clean is really a big job to personal hygiene and germs prevention. Of course you can wash your hands more often, but when it is not possible, you need alcohol-based hand sanitizers.

It is recommended by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that alcohol-based hand sanitizers can be used when soap and water are not available. The alcohol content in the sanitizer is safe and effective in reducing the level of germs on hands. Such antibacterial hand sanitizer can be effective to kill 99.9% of the common germs.

There are five types of hand sanitizers that you can choose from, the original instant one, the moisture therapy one, the aloe one, the ocean mist and spring bloom. You just need to rub the sanitizer onto your hands and wait for it to dry. No water is required.

The aloe one contains aloe and vitamin E and leaves hands feeling soft and smooth. It leaves hands refreshed without a sticky residue. Both ocean mist and spring bloom contains moisturizer and vitamin E to enable soft and refresh feeling of your hands. It costs you around $6 per bottle. You can get around 29-30 uses for 2 oz.

Some of you may not like alcohol hand sanitizer. If you have children, you may wish to switch to a safer, non-flammable and skin-care alcohol free hand sanitizer. Alcohol free sanitizer does dry up your hands, non flammable and non toxic. Unlike alcohol ones, the sanitizing power stays there after the drying of the sanitizer.

Germinator is one of the brands that offer alcohol free hand sanitizer for children. You can choose between the fragrance one and the non fragrance one. It also offers a 50ml handy size which you can bring along with you when you are out. It cost around $7 for 250ml size and $4 for 50ml size.

Another brand for alcohol free hand sanitizer is Soapopular. Soapopular can also clean 99.9% of germs and yet no sticky residue feeling, non-toxic and non-irritating to skin.

Every day, we are facing the increasingly powerful germs and bacteria, the H1N1, Avian Flu and SARS, etc. Other than medicine, the most effective way to avoid catching these germs and diseases is personal hygiene. Hands are one of the most germ-exposed body parts as you touch everywhere and every place with your hands. Washing hands works but it is not convenient and sometimes impossible. In this case, you need hand sanitizers.

Most of the times you use hand sanitizers are with hand sanitizer dispensers. Basically, you can choose between foam hand sanitizer dispenser and the gel one. Also, you can choose between manual pressing one (usually comes along with hand sanitizer) and automatic hand sanitizer dispenser. Some of the dispensers are quite attractive, which can be additions to upscale décor for both home and office.

Purell hand sanitizer dispenser

Purell hand sanitizer dispensers offer both gel and foam hand sanitizer dispenser. For both gel and foam sanitizer, you can choose between the push ones or the hand free ones.

For push ones, there are basically three models. The Purell® 800 Series Bag-in-Box Dispenser, PURELL® NXT™ Space Saver™ Dispenser and PURELL® FMX-12™ Dispenser.

Purell FMX-12 is gray in color and is specially designed for foam which is enriched with vitamins and moisturizers. Push dispensers, with viewing window for easy maintenance, offer a generous portion of soft, gentle foam. Air is infused into the soap as it is dispensed, resulting in a rich, creamy lather. It is considered as a small and traditional hand sanitizing dispenser. It can holds up to 1200ml sanitizer. It can be mounted to wall with adhesive (included) or screws (not included). It costs around $13. Purell 800 is designed to use a sanitary-sealed, 800 ml bag-in-box refills. It comes in both white and gray colors. It cost around $14 each.

PURELL Space Saver can hold 100ml refills but it is smaller than the Purell 800 in size. It is most suitable to fit in most of smaller house. You can have only gray for your color choice. It costs around $13.

If you would like the automatic ones to better prevent cross contamination, you can chose Purell® TFX™ Touch-Free Dispenser.
This dispenser is touch-free and it can hold 1,200ml gel or foam. An extra large window better reminds you for reloading. It comes in only with gray color. It is more expensive compared to the push one at around $33.

Other than Purell, you can have another choice which is at the more professional end, Epi-Clenz foam dispenser. But this is much more expensive as it is selling over $100 for 16oz (approx. 448ml). Some household users buy this because they have a farm and therefore exceptionally high standard of hygiene is required.

Some of my friends tell me that sometimes you may not need dish detergents when the dishes are not that greasy. To be environmentally friendly, it is always true. But dish detergent is not only designed to clean the oil but also the bacteria.

Many of you may use dishwashers instead of hand washing, you have to choose your dish washing detergent carefully. As the hand washing ones are definitely not suitable for your dishwashers. Too much foam can be generated and leaks out from the dishwashers. Common brands include Cascade, Pamolive Ajax and Sunlight dish detergent.

Cascade dish detergent

Cascade dish soap has three line of dishwashing detergent including the Complete, Dawn and Bleach. You can choose among ActionPac, liquid dish detergent or powder detergent.

The Complete line is for those who do not like pre-wash but just put the dishes into the dishwasher and go. If you do not mind for pre-wash, then you can go for Dawn or Bleach depends on how clean you want your dishes. If you are cleaning coffee or tea stain, it is recommended to use the bleach one.
